In 1989, Dirk Houweling established Tangmere Airfield Nurseries. This family business is based on the famous Battle of Britain airfield, originally home to RAF Tangmere. Today, the site has been revived and is now home to passionate pepper growers committed to producing fresh, quality peppers, whilst protecting the land and environment. The Spanish site, acquired in 2001 supplements the British crop in winter, and ensures a continuous supply to customers 365 days a year. Further glasshouses in Somerset grow organic produce supplying both peppers and ridge cucumbers. A successful combination of innovative, biological growing methods using expertise developed over two decades enables the delivery of a dependable, high quality crop with full traceability from plant to table. Several varieties of pepper are grown, producing many colours and flavours to meet changing consumer needs. Tangmere is an industry leader, maintaining its reputation through investment in cutting edge technology, commitment to environmental sustainability, food safety standards, and an extensive programme of research and development.
